What a weekend! With Mardi Gras as a backdrop, the Black Female Development Circle, Inc. had no choice but to have a great time during our 3rd National Conference “Sisterhood Under One Umbrella” in New Orleans, LA! God loved our theme so much that he brought on the rain and we brought out the umbrellas!
We began on Friday with an interactive pre-conference workshop discussing “Good Hair: Relaxed or Natural”. Then we followed with Arian Simone delivering an awesome message to get us started. She spoke on how we can “Cultivate True Sisterhood” and left us with the “Sisterhood Accord” that we will certainly continue to learn and grow from!
Bright and early Saturday morning we began our workshops which had topics related to chapter management, ethical leadership, and how to stay involved with BFDC after graduation. A favorite of the workshops was facilitated by Dr. Demetra Andrews, Faculty member in the College of Business at Florida State University. Her session was so great that I was receiving text messages in the middle of it letting me know how awesome it and she was! Thanks for sharing your time and talent with us Dr. Andrews!!
The workshops were followed by our keynote luncheon and speaker, Ms. Kim Bondy. She is such an amazing woman and gave an amazing speech encouraging all of us to be of great courage. Her closing comment “sometimes looks like crazy”, was a favorite for the remainder of the weekend.
Immediately after the luncheon we heard from Angela Donald, Marcus Osborne and Drs. Kristal and Kawachi Clemons as the featured panelist for our Male/Female Relationship Forum. The relationship forum was definitely a favorite amongst the attendees. In fact, the major complaint we received about the conference was that the forum should have been longer!
The officers and voting delegates then gathered for the BFDC Business meeting where national updates were given and the election of the 2011-2013 National Director took place.
We closed on Sunday with our TRULY Spirit Led/Spirit Fed Breakfast. Angela Donald gave an amazing speech using the umbrella as a metaphor which forced all of us to be honest about what our role in BFDC really is. She stepped on a few toes, but that’s what we love about her! It was evident that the Holy Spirit was all over her message and it was exactly what we all needed to hear!
Finally, during our closing ceremony the following awards were given:
National Chapter of the Year – University of Central Florida
National Collegiate Member of the Year – Claudia Lartey, UCF Chapter
The National Board then surprised me (without my permission 😉 ) with a brand new award – National Woman of Distinction. Thanks ladies 🙂
April Harrison, Director of Records then announced that I was re-elected and will serve as the 2011-2013 National Director!
Overall the conference was a huge success and I’m already looking forward to 2013!
Be sure to join us for our next national event: The 4th Annual Purple Power Seminar “A Beautiful Me”. See you in August!
